Conference on Caravaggio at Library and Archives, Friday, May 13 at 7:30 pm
On Friday, May 13, Mirella Ioly will give an illustrated lecture on the great 17th century Italian artist, Caravaggio. Mrs. Ioly’s lecture, “Arte e società nell'età di Caravaggio” (Art and Society in the Age of Caravaggio), will be in Italian. The talk takes place at Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, at 7:30 pm.  A discussion period in English and Italian will follow.
Admission is free. Refreshments, courtesy of Il Negozio Nicastro (792 Bank Street), will follow.
Ms. Ioly’s lecture will be followed on Wednesday, May 25 by another conference,  “Caravaggio and His Followers” by Prof. Francesco Loriggio, also at Library and Archives Canada. The conferences are presented jointly by the Dante Alighieri Society of Ottawa and The National Congress of Italian Canadians, Ottawa District

OPEN FORMAT is a monthly series presenting a changing roster of secret DJs mixing together
music they love, freely and regardless of genre.
It takes place once a month, from 9:00pm to 1:00am,
beginning January 2011 at Shanghai Restaurant (651 Somerset Street West, Ottawa)
It is free but by donation, with the DJs of each night directing
all monies to people and/or places in our communities where it may be helpful.

Music Gala
In celebration of the school’s platinum anniversary, a number of shining lights and rising stars will return to campus in a performance emceed by Alan Neal, BJ/95, host of All in a Day on CBC Ottawa. He welcomes: 2011 Juno jazz vocalist of the year Kellylee Evans, BAHons/97; critically acclaimed soprano Shawne Elizabeth, DMus/95, an associate performance instructor in the School for Studies in Art and Culture and resident soprano with fusion opera company Ooh Lah Lah; Nadia Petrella, BMus/07, a gifted young artist now studying at the Manhattan School of Music who will be appearing later this year with Pellegrini Opera; Erinne-Colleen Laurin, an emerging young soprano who is a volunteer with the Music Chapter of the Carleton University Alumni Association; and pianist John Kofi Dapaah, a current Carleton music student.
Film Screening
Winds of Heaven: Emily Carr, Carvers and the Spirits of the Forest is a ninety-minute filmic journey into the deep brooding mystery and inner beauty of Emily Carr’s paintings—a  lyrical, luminescent and entertaining impression of the life of Carr and her connection to the First Nations people of the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. Winner of the Best Documentary Photography Award of the Canadian Cinematographers Society, (April 2011) the 90-minute work has been praised for being “visually sumptuous” by The Globe and Mail (January 2011) and described as “a beautiful film whose cinematography flows like acrylic paint across canvas” by The Toronto Star (January 2011). The film is directed by Michael Ostroff, an instructor in the School of Journalism and Communications at Carleton University, the original score was written by Edmund Eagan, BMus/82.
