In honour of Earth Day (April 22), Miss Smartypants is tackling green questions all this month. Send yours to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . You can send other questions there, too. She's not picky.

Dear Miss Smartypants,

I don't think I should be throwing batteries into the garbage because they'll end up leeching poisonous chemicals into landfills and making mutant seagulls. So what do I do with them?

Double A

Dear Double up,

Ah, so nice of you to care for the seagulls. When I lived at home, my mom took batteries to work because the hospital had a disposal system for them. When I was at university, we had little bins attached to recycling boxes around campus. You should try checking in with similar local institutions or with your municipal government to see what programs they have in place. In Ontario, you can also bring your batteries (and paint cans!) to any Home Depot. If you're in Ottawa, you can learn how to dispose of batteries and other hazardous household products through the Take it Back! program.

Fully charged,

Miss Smartypants

Update: Also Ottawa-related: Battercycle.
