Dear Miss Smartypants,

I have this new boss. He kind of sucks. He belittled my opinion in a staff meeting the other day, and I don't know how to deal with that. I don't know if he was trying to be funny or if he thinks that's an appropriate way to behave or what. But he's new. Not just as my boss, but to the company. Is this just what he's like or should I wait and see what happens after a few weeks? Maybe he's trying to assert himself? Maybe he'll get a better handle on the corporate atmosphere?

Unclear How to Move Ahead

Dear To the Left,

Without knowing the specifics, I can't say for sure if he was trying to be funny either. Did other people laugh? Did anyone signal either during the meeting or afterwards to you that the behaviour was inappropriate? When new employees join a team in progress, it can take a while for both the new staff and the old staff to feel each other out and find a way to mesh. It could just be that he hasn't found his groove with all of you yet, that he's carrying over bad behaviours from his last job that won't fly in the new one. He's not going to figure that out in the first meeting. All that said, he could just be a dick. Keep a record of what was said and when, and record any other inappropriate remarks as well. If the problem persists, go to HR or to his boss if you have to. It's kind of you to consider the possibility that he, the unit, and the company just need to get used to each other. Hopefully that's all it is. If not, you have every right to be treated with respect and to complain if you aren't.

Standing still,

Miss Smartypants
