Dear Ms. Pants,
I have an extended break coming up, and I want to take my cat home with me. It's a long drive. People are telling me to drug him, but I'm wondering if that's cruel?
Bad Mommy?
Dear Crazy Cat Lady,
Let me ask you this: if you had a child who suffered from motion sickness, would you think it cruel to give him some Gravol on a long trip? Of course not. Motion sickness is no picnic, and the possibility that Gravol might help your kid to nod off is icing on the cake. If you plan to keep your cat in the carrier for the length of the trip, he's going to be unhappy, uncomfortable, and probably meowing its fool head off. If you plan to allow it to roam free, it will potentially do the sort of things that my cat was prone to while in the car: hiding under the seats, trying to crawl under the pedals, and attacking the passengers. It's not safe or pleasant for you, your cat, or your carpoolers, which means it is cruel not to at least speak to your vet about a mild sedative.
Relaxed,
Miss Smartypants
