 Dear Miss Smartypants,

I'm homesick.  How do I cope?

Sad

Dear Blankie,

Let's assume that you ruled out the obvious solution (go home) for equally obvious reasons (no money). You left home for a reason, whatever it may be (e.g. school, work, camp), so try to focus on that. If it's school, make a point of going to all your classes and doing your readings. You need to form a new pattern for your pied-à-terre. Secondly, get out, make friends, and spend time with said friends. The number one way to forget about one thing is to replace it with another, so find out what your new locale has to offer and take advantage of it, whether that means museums, music venues, or cooking classes. Even if you don't end up liking all these new things (okay, maybe that Thai cooking course wasn't your best idea ever), you'll still be getting out of the house. Believe me, that alone makes a difference. If you fill your days with activities and focus on doing things you love that can be done regardless of location, you'll be too busy to be homesick. You should still call your mom everyone once and a while, though.

(Wo)Man about town,

Smartypants
