Dear Ms. Pants,

I'm not going home for reading week because I am worried about all the work I have to do, but I am not working well because I am upset about not going home.  What do I do?

Conflicted

Dear Been There,

Why can't you work at home? I assume you know the answer to this -- that you'll have too many familial obligations or that you know you'll be lazy or that your parents have dial up -- because otherwise I don't see what the problem is. Mind you, I once went home for a week between exams with the intention of getting caught up on the readings I never did and cracked that reader open exactly zero times while I was there. If that's the case, I get where you're coming from. Depending on what your answer to my original question is, you can either a) stay where you are, accept that getting your work done is your current priority, and resolve not to worry about it, b) go home, accept that that's what your priority is, and worry about the lost work time later, or c) split the difference. Consider your work strategically, and figure out exactly how many days you could afford to go home for once you subtract the time you need to work. Chances are that you'll find that there is some room for compromise. Otherwise, take out your calendar, plan when you will have time for that trip, and then buckle down. I did feel bad about failing that exam, after all.

Scholastically,

Miss Smartypants
