RuPaul’s Drag Race: And the gigantic crown goes to….

Posted by Lauren in you gotta be original , superstar , show me how you burlesque , RPDR , may the best woman win , I'll miss the puns , I want a real lunch with Ru , finale , crazy people , Chaz , champion , blazing saddles

RuPaul's Drag Race

We have come a long way together, folks. From mopping to tucking to beating our faces. I’m getting teary just thinking about it, which just won’t work because in honor of tonight’s finale, I am decked out in full drag myself. Last week, we had a fun recap show that was more entertaining than probably any recap show I have ever watched. I didn’t recap it here, but I highly recommend you check it out. Chaz Bono appears in a Ru Burlesque stage act cover of Cher’s performance of “You haven’t seen the last of me”. Amazing stuff, I tell you.

On to tonight’s finale! The three ladies we have left are Alexis Mateo, the super sweet queen with prom-fashion sensibilities, Manila Luzon, co-creator of the dumb Heathers group and overactor (but she does have a pretty solid look and generally fabulous outfits), and my personal fave, Raja—runway model with a talent for fashion and a walk that would make Tyra (and Miss J) proud. Who will take home the (literally 2 foot tall) crown? Ru tells us it will be shocking!

Vampire Diaries Will Write You a Great Eulogy

Posted by April in witches , whedon-verse , werewolves , vampires , vampire diaries , twilight , supernatural , man-witch , it all comes back to buffy , get it together , continuity whoa , bitches of eastwick , bffs

Photo: Bob Mahoney/The CW ©2011 The CW NetworkLast week’s The Vampire Diaries, “The Last Day,” proved two things: Damon is love’s bitch, and there’s little anyone can do to stop Klaus. Not that I think Elena is going to die (I’ve watched TV before, babies), but there’s no telling what the exact outcome will be. Also, the CW Rochester STILL has flippin’ sound problems during VD broadcasts. Get it together, network.

Magic Elixir Does the Body Good

The ep opens with shirtless Damon, and one of my viewing companions opines that all eps should start this way. Downstairs in front of Eternal Fireplace, Elijah is recapping the truth about the curse for Stefan and now Damon. Damon’s all about power player Bonnie, but Elena – natch – is still tweaking about her best girl dying. Damon: “I'll write her a great eulogy.”  I can only imagine! “In the months since I tried to rip Bonnie’s throat out, we developed a steamy sexual chemistry that forced us to no longer share the screen because the writers weren’t pushing a dirty, dirty vamp-witchy romance. I sure as hell thought about it, but it didn’t happen. Anyway, turns out she was cool beans. Now she’s dead. See ya, Bon-Bon! Have fun with other Bitches of Eastwick serving nature in the great beyond!”

Splitting the Choir
The Moving Images of Donigan Cumming
Friday April 29, 7:30pm @ Club SAW
The Canadian Film Institute is pleased to present Splitting the Choir, a two-part retrospective of the videographic work of Montreal-based artist Donigan Cumming. The event marks a period of sixteen years since Cumming’s first video: A PRAYER FOR NETTIE (1995), a haunting and unsettling elegy to the artist’s long-time photographic model Nettie Harris, known for her stunning poses in the photographic series Pretty Ribbons (1993).
An award-winning photographer and filmmaker, Cumming has internationally exhibited and screened videos that are widely praised (and criticized) for their genre-bending, unsettling iconoclasm. Working from within the social realist documentary mode, Cumming explores the frontiers of representation, pushing ethical boundaries into uncharted areas – where many artists fear to tread. Cumming’s work blurs the lines between ethnographic film and the theatre of the absurd, incisively splitting the choir of audience opinion. As he continues to chart the underrepresented life-worlds and experiences of the marginal (elderly, ill, damaged, broken) citizens of Montreal, those who would seem to be so radically “other,” Cumming insistently reminds us of the things we share in common.
This retrospective coincides with the publication of the Canadian Film Institute’s critical anthology, Splitting the Choir: The Moving Images of Donigan Cumming, edited by Scott Birdwise.
The essays in this volume take up a range of topics in relation to Cumming’s videos, from the role of photography and memory in the moving images and temporalities of video to questions of ethics, representation and performance in the documentary.
Contributors: Scott Birdwise, Mireille Bourgeois, Zoë Constantinides, Blake Fitzpatrick, Marcy Goldberg, Mike Hoolboom, Tom McSorley, Solomon Nagler, Craig Rodmore, Christopher Rohde.
Donigan Cumming will be in attendance at the opening night of the retrospective/book launch to introduce and discuss his work.

The Art of Mourning in Ottawa: ReVisioning Victorian Bereavement Artefacts

In partnership with Prairie Scene
Saskatchewan-born, Ottawa-based artist and academic Cindy Stelmackowich will present the findings of her artist-in-residence project at the Bytown Museum. During the winter of 2011, Ms. Stelmackowich unearthed and researched a wide range of Victorian mourning artefacts from the Museum’s collection. From her study of these artefacts she intends to create new artworks that will highlight the intimately-charged visual languages of mourning, mortality, beauty and death.
Mourning artefacts in the Bytown Museum’s collection comprise a wide range of decorative, domestic and public memorabilia, and include hair wreaths, veils, clothing, jewelry such as lockets, bracelets and earrings which incorporate hair, and decorative items such as memory ware jugs.
The Bytown Museum’s acting curator, Judith Parker, inaugurated the residency program in 2011 to facilitate access to the Museum’s significant collection. The residency program supports innovative research and creative interpretation of this important cultural repository that reflects Ottawa’s early history.
·         Public talk given by artist Cindy Stelmackowich
·         Saturday 30 April, 2011, from 2 - 3 pm
·         In English
·         Bytown Museum. Free admission

Vampire Diaries: A Tale of One Curse

Posted by April in witches , wigs , whedon-verse , vampires , vampire diaries , tv , recap , it all comes back to buffy , hot Canadians

Photo: Bob Mahoney/The CW ©2011I just watched last week’s The Vampire Diaries last night, so I don’t really have time to give “Klaus” the full recap treatment. But! I do need to talk about how the sun and the moon curse doesn’t exist because this shit is genius.

I’ll admit that I wasn’t too jazzed about a Klaus backstory ep. It seems like filler to me. I should have known better, though, because Vampire Diaries don’t play that way. “Klaus” wasn’t as action packed as “The Last Dance” or my hero “Masquerade,” but it did give us the answer we’ve all been waiting for: why the curse matters to Klaus. As an Original, he’s not bound by the sun, so what else is there? I’ll tell you what: there is no sun and moon curse. There is only one curse, it’s only on Klaus, and it’s to quell his vampire-werewolf hybrid nature. YES! He’s Scott Speedman in Underworld! Sadly not played by Scott Speedman, but still. Here’s how that goes.

Klaus and his six brothers and sisters, including ELIJAH, make up the Originals. Don’t ask me how because Elijah didn’t want to get into the specifics. Except Klaus, you see, is the product of an affair between their mother and the father of a werewolf clan (werewolves predate vampires, it turns out). A vampire-werewolf hybrid is too powerful and has no natural balance, so the servants of nature (i.e. witches, now called eco-warriors) put a curse on Klaus to limit him to vampire. Klaus seeks to break the curse because it’s all about power. It’s all about power being, of course, a conclusion I can get behind.

RuPaul’s Drag Race: You gotta lip sync for your liiiiiiife!

Posted by Lauren in Team Raja , RuVC , recap , late recaps , La Toya , final three , emotional breakdowns , DWTS

Last week, Carmen Carrera was brought back from the dead and then sent sashaying away yet again. No one was sad to see her go. Raja was also in the bottom two, which was traumatic for her.

This week is all about the money. The mini challenge is to host RuVC, a home shopping network. The ladies have to get Ru to buy their products. Raja is up first and she looks jacked out. She is selling her “gaff” which is apparently a junk-strapping down apparatus. Manila is pitching MANila spray. She looks better as a brunette. Yara pitches hair that is also a puppet. Don’t ask me to explain it. Alexis is hocking her handmade butt inserts. Who do I call about this? I am in. Ru selects Yara’s hair piece. She wins money for the next challenge.

The main challenge is at a “Make That Money Ball”. The ladies will have to create three different looks—Swimsuit Body Beautiful, Cocktail Attire After 5 pm, and Evening Gown Eleganza. The ladies get to work and are generally stressed out about the amount of work they have to do. Part way through the day, Ru gives the gals another challenge. They have to choreograph a group number to kick of the ball (to La Toya Jackson’s “Just Wanna Dance”). It seems like Alexis is really struggling with her garments, and she threatens to leave the competition. She packs some stuff up, and leaves the room. But then she comes right back. What a waste of time.

Galerie St-Laurent + Hill is pleased to present a series of new works by
  Montréal artist Nina Cherney.

The trademarks of Nina Cherney`s work are exuberant colour and dynamic
brushwork. In this exhibition, the artist presents a series of paintings
evoking the sights and smells of the landscape around her country home in
the Laurentians. These paintings refer to a sublime moment, when natural
beauty overwhelms us. The large scale and thick layers of paint translate
this awe and joy. The quirky perspectives and shapes and vivid colours
deliver intense emotions, forcing the viewer to react.

Nina Cherney lives and works in Montreal and is a graduate
of Concordia University, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in
Painting and Drawing .She has exhibited her work in galleries in Canada .Her
work can also be found in numerous corporate collections.

Ride of Silence - Gatineau
Date: May 18, 2011  Time: meet at 6:30 pm,
Location: Maison du Citoyen, 25 rue Laurier, Gatineau (Hull sector)
This annual event started in 2003 in Texas in memory of cyclists injured or killed on the road.  The ride now takes place in over 320 cities worldwide on the third Wednesday of May.

The Ride of Silence is like a funeral procession. We will be riding  at around 15 km/h. No talking is allowed, as silence is how we can remember our deceased sisters and brothers. Black arm bands will be worn in memory of the deceased, and a red arm band will be worn for those injured or intimidated by motorists. A bicycle helmet is mandatory, and red and white flashing lights are a good idea to be seen.

We also take this opportunity to raise the drivers' awareness that we are here.

Dancing with the Stars: Guilty Pleasures

Posted by Lauren in wax on , wax off , the guilt-o-meter , TBerg is awesome , recap , non-traditional teaching methods , Hanson is poor , Hanson is old , guilty pleasures , giant coats are dangerous , DWTS

It is guilty pleasures night on DWTS, and we kick off the night with a performance from Hanson. Yes. You read that correctly. Who lists “Mmmbop” as a guilty pleasure? Not I. All of these Hanson lads seem really old now, which makes me old. Good times. Apparently all of the songs tonight are “guilty pleasures” so I will be rating each of them for their guilt-factor. Please keep in mind that I don’t know anything about music.

Kirstie Alley and Maks: This week, these two are dancing a samba to Kirstie’s guilty pleasure of “Hit me Baby One More Time” by Britney. God bless the costumers for putting Kirstie in a very flattering outfit this evening. She looks pretty cute. Maks, on the other hand, is wearing a high-waisted trouser and it is giving him mom jeans butt. Unflattering! Their samba is ok. It isn’t as high-energy as most sambas, and Kirstie doesn’t seem to be having as much fun as usual. Len thinks the performance was great, and Bruno agrees. The boys give her two 9s and Carrie Ann gives her an 8. Not bad scores at all. Guilt-o-meter rating: 7 giant sunglasses out of 10. This song is really not that bad, and it is a pre-mess Britney, so it is forgivable.

Chris Jericho and Cheryl: This week these two are tackling the tango, and Chris’ song is the recently overplayed (thanks, Glee!) “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. The dance is ok…it certainly holds my attention, even though the tango is a harsher dance than is allowed for in this pop song. The judges don’t really like it. Bruno says Chris looked like a block of granite, which I kind of agree with. Len defends Chris and says that his technique is good. They get two 7s and an 8. Guilt-o-meter rating: 3 baseball caps out of 10. This song has been made into a mainstream hit by the aforementioned Glee and it is not really a guilty pleasure at all.

Dancing with the Stars and Stripes

Posted by Lauren in unflattering dancewear , recap , look who's still friends , DWTS , an officer AND a gentleman , america

Last week, Sugar Ray Leonard got sent home—kind of a surprise because Kendra did so poorly, but not a shocker because he wasn’t a super strong dancer. This week, it is all about America!

Ralph Macchio and Karina: These two have a samba this week, and are doing a cowboy theme. The music is “Sweet Home Alabama” and the dance really looks like a two-step. It is a weird style choice for a samba, and I don’t think it worked well at all. Fun two step, lame samba. Len says Ralph doesn’t have great rhythm. Bruno completely agrees with me. Carrie Ann thinks it was pretty good for a weird fusion. They receive 7s from Len and Bruno and an 8 from Carrie Ann.

Chris Jericho and Cheryl:  During the clip package, Chris does a hilarious impression of Len. Good times. He is out to prove to Len that he is 8-worthy. They are doing the Viennese waltz to “America the Beautiful”, and it is pretty good. Chris isn’t as naturally graceful as some people, but he does pretty well with this dance. It is smooth and flowing. They receive 9s from Carrie Ann and Bruno and an 8 from Len. Chris is so excited…it is adorable.

PARIKRAMA: a journey in Indian Dance, Yoga, Tabla,
Indian artistic and performing arts give form to profound philosophical ideas. According to Hindu philosophy the world was both created and destroyed by the dance of Shiva/Nataraja. The small hour glass shaped drum (damaru) in Nataraja’s right hand provides the rhythm for the creation of the universe, while the fire of destruction held in his left hand is unleashed during his cataclysmic dance of destruction. The semi-circular ring of fire (tiruvasi) which surrounds the dancing Shiva emphasises the cyclical nature of the universe.
At Arts Court Theatre on 15 and 16 April, Cultural Horizons presents a show based on both philosophical and environmental themes. Three Ottawa artists, Anjali, Basia Going and Blair Miller, collaborate to create a colourful and spiritually moving experience. Inspired by the philosophy of ancient Hindu texts (Upanishads and Shiva Puranas) and based around the cyclical structure of the cosmos, Anjali (dance), Basia (yoga), and Blair (tabla) explore the symbolism of Nataraja, performing in front of exquisite images and unique video of Hindu art, temples and the dynamic scenery of the Himalayas, where Shiva performs his eternal cosmic dance.
Anjali has studied in India with some of the most famous hereditary masters. In this performance, she includes dances presented from the traditional classical Indian repertoire using innovative choreography recently presented in New Delhi, India.  The show is an exploration of our relationship with the Earth and is set to the poetry of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Blair Miller (tabla) highlights Anjali’s dance in the Kathak and Sufi Dance traditions. The evening concludes with a unique collaboration between Anjali and Basia, exploring the rich mythology of the God Shiva through dance and yoga. Basia (Adishesha Yoga) is one of Ottawa’s leading yoga teachers. Blair Miller has trained and performed in India. to critical acclaim.
Indian snacks and a chance to meet the artists after the recital is included in the price of admission..."This is art without borders. Anjali and Tony [Gaston] are part of an international group of artists whose artistic expression belongs to world art. .. transnational work.. resonates with diverse audiences be they from India Canada or elsewhere. At this moment in history.. these artists are speaking globally." Arshiya Sethi Kri Foundation, New Delhi, India

RuPaul's Drag Race: You Gotta be Relatable!

Posted by Lauren in Sorry Eleanor! , Sorry Eleanor! , RPDR , recap , obscene cheers , I am on fire , Heathers can't throw , Grease is the word , dunk tanks tap into our basest humor , die Heathers , crumpet dunking , badonka donk

Last week, Shangela was sent sashaying away, and Ru announced that the other judges had the opporunity to save a previously eliminated queen. Who will it be?

Ru introduces this week’s theme with a reference to Grease. “If you can’t be an athlete, be an athletic supporter” – Eve Arden is a gem. The ladies prepare to see which queen will be returning to the game, and it is Carmen Carrera. Ugh. I have no patience for her talentless ass. Also, this gives Raja the opportunity to start talking about the Heathers again, which makes me kind of hate Raja (who I actually love).

The mini challenge this week involves the “Badonka donk dunk tank”. The ladies get to try to dunk the fellow contestant of their choosing. Carmen is in the tank first (at the behest of Raja), and there is just something always funny about a person dropping unexpectedly into water. Ru cackles with glee each time it happens. While Raja was unable to dunk Carmen more than one time in her two minutes, Alexis has decidedly better aim and dunks Yara Sofia a hilarious 14 times. Yara attempts to exact her revenge, but she only gets Alexis wet (ahem) 7 times. Manila chooses to dunk Carmen as well, but only gets her once. Carmen chooses to dunk Raja, and dunks her 6 times. From this, we have learned that Heathers can’t throw.

Dancing with the Stars: Classical Night's Alright

Posted by Lauren in toupees , Tom Bergeron FT(five square)W , Sabrina the Teenaged Witch , recap , Potter! , Kendra FTL , I didn't recieve a strong musical education , DWTS , bitchface

Last week, Wendy Williams was sent packing for her inability to dance. That is two weeks in a row where the correct person was sent home (in my humble opinion). This week we have a 47 piece orchestra and two famous classical musicians (or so they say…true classical music fans would probably take offense at that title), violinist David Garrett and mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins.

Romeo and Chelsie: These two start the evening off with a paso doble. Romeo has bitchface tonight. Trying to channel his inner matador, I guess. The matadors I have seen (oh yes, I have seen some) are always more fun-loving. They are showmen! Think Liberace, but with jazzier outfits. Romeo’s paso doble is ok. He certainly has the intensity down, but he just isn’t a very compelling dancer. It ends with a lot of energy, and the crowd goes nuts for it. The judges are generally praising of his performance, but I think their scores aren’t going to be stellar. Each of the judges does mention that technique wasn’t perfect. They receive one 7 (apparently a deduction for a life) and two 8s.

Kendra Wilkinson and Louis: Kendra and Louis are doing a Viennese Waltz tonight. Kendra apparently hates both classical music and being a lady. She is really irritating. I mean, I am all for bucking female stereotypes, but she just seems to want to whine about everything she has to do. Don’t go on a dancing show if you have no interest in trying different dances. The dance is not great…Kendra keeps breaking out of her character (which is supposed to be an angry woman, I think). In addition to her distracting face, the dance is very choppy and she gets lost a few times. Bruno hated it. This is saying something; he loves everything. He thinks it was an offence against the beautiful song. Carrie Ann thinks that her not committing to being elegant really hurt the dance. Len is (surprisingly) the good cop here and tells her she is a beginner and should be given a break. The judges all agree that it was a 6-worthy performance.

MICHAEL HOSALUK (Saskatoon) takes the chair as his point of departure, “liberating” it from its function by making it an outline building block. The public is then invited to interact with the chair units to create larger sculptures, even to the point of taking a chair to plant it in a new environment, bursting beyond the specialized public space of a gallery into real public space. Hosaluk’s chairs have been rescued by Saskatoon’s Fire Department from a thawing river and dismantled from a tree in the downtown core. There have been many such acts of “Chairorism” that have gone on to inspire a play and short film.
