golden globeGolden Globe nominations, because of their comedy/drama split, are always a mixed bag. Despite the fact that some excellent movies have come out in the last year, it's been more miss than hit, so we're going to try to pare it down to an essential viewing/incredibly biased predictions. Here we go:

Film

Drama

Black Swan, The Fighter

  • Open in Ottawa this Friday.

Inception

  • Though not everyone around here agrees, Inception is a minor masterpiece: a clever deconstruction of filmmaking disguised as a meditation on grief and memory (two of Christopher Nolan's pet themes, surely). And that zero g fight sequence goes like gangbusters. The lack of acting nods must smart.

The King's Speech

  • Opens in Ottawa December 22.

The Social Network

  • Factual inaccuracies and possibly sexism aside (for the record, I would argue that the characters, not the movie itself, are sexist), it's a bold movie that shows us an anti-hero for two hours as a tragic hero in the last five minutes. Everything about this movie comes together, and it's Inception's only competition for breathtaking editing. The Social Network FTW.

Comedy/musical

Alice in Wonderland

  • The movie that made me quit 3D.

Burlesque

  • Though calling it "good" might be stretching the definition of the word a bit too far, what it is, start to to finish, is entertaining, and that still counts for something. Plus, Cher broke the window out Kristen Bell's car.

The Kids Are All Right

  • Not sure it's entirely accurate to call this one a comedy, it's a beautiful piece about a family in transition and surely the only worthy nominee in the bunch. The Kids Are All Right FTW.

RED

  • I assume this is some kind of mistake.

The Tourist

  • Perhaps Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck made the transition to English too soon.

Director

Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
David Fincher, The Social Network
Tom Hooper, The King's Speech
Christopher Nolan, Inception FTW
David O. Russell, The Fighter

Not because I think he'll win, but because I want him to.

Actor, drama

Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
Colin Firth, The King's Speech
James Franco, 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter

I'd actually love to see up-and-coming iconoclasts like Eisenberg, Franco, or Gosling win (particularly Gosling, a fearless actor if there ever was one), but I think Firth should take it if only as a corrective for not winning every prize ever for A Single Man.

Actress, drama

Halle Berry, Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone
Natalie Portman, Blawn Swan
Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine

What most excites me here is Portman, who I've long felt doesn't get her due as an actress (in part due to her roles, but that's a whole other can of worms), but Winter's Bone is where it's at. Now where's the love for John Hawkes? A question for the ages, that one.

Actor, comedy/musical

Johnny Depp, Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp, The Tourist
Paul Giamatti, Barney's Version
Jake Gyllenhaal, Love and Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey, Casino Jack

With apologies, this crop of nominees is singularly uninspired. I go with Giamatti because, well, he's Paul Giamatti.

Actress, comedy/musical

Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
Anne Hathaway, Love and Other Drugs
Angelina Jolie, The Tourist
Julianne Moore, The Kids Are All Right
Emma Stone, Easy A

Stone could charm the cork out of a champagne bottle in Easy A, but Bening deserves the ward for, "If I hear one more person say how much they love heirloom tomatoes, I'm going to punch them right in the face."

Supporting actor

Christian Bale, The Fighter
Michael Douglas, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
Jeremy Renner, The Town
Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech

Who I'd really like to see here is Armie Hammer for creating two distinct personalities in The Social Network, but I'll settle for Garfield. But really, Garfield FTW just generally: new Spiderman, Never Let Me Go, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Garfield FTW in life.

Supporting actress

Amy Adams, The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech
Mila Kunis, Black Swan
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom

I have no thoughts about this.

Animated movie

Toy Story 3
The Illusionist
How to Train Your Dragon
Despicable Me
Tangled

Is it possible for a movie to beat the Pixar juggernaut? Should it?

Television

Drama

Boardwalk Empire, HBO
Dexter, Showtime
The Good Wife, CBS
Mad Men, AMC
The Walking Dead, AMC

As much as I have loved Boardwalk Empire, it's sometimes too bogged down in period specificity to reach the epic scope and sweep of the best ever season of Mad Men. Compare that to The Walking Dead, which I also love, and you're bordering on blasphemy. But while we're here, where's Treme?

Comedy

30 Rock, NBC
The Big Bang Theory, CBS
The Big C, Showtime
Glee, Fox
Modern Family, ABC
Nurse Jackie, Showtime

Sadly, Glee is the only show among these that I watch, and I wouldn't want to see it win.

Actor, drama

Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
John Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House

Love to Laurie, but I stopped watching House this season. I even stopped following along with the chatter. While Boardwalk Empire may have its (relatively few) flaws, absolutely none of them are down to Buscemi's work as Nucky Thompson, a man who's learning the hard way that being half a gangster isn't enough anymore.

Actress, drama

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Piper Perabo, Covert Affairs
Katey Sagal, Sons of Anarchy
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

"The Suitcase." Enough said.

Actor, comedy

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Thomas Jane, Hung
Matthew Morrison, Glee
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

My only real thought here is that it's a waste of talent for Morrison not to get to play a real character.

Actress, comedy

Toni Collette, The United States of Tara
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Lea Michele, Glee

No thoughts here either.

Supporting actor, series, miniseries or movie

Scott Caan, Hawaii Five-O
Chris Colfer, Glee
Chris Noth, The Good Wife
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
David Strathairn, Temple Grandin

Though Strathairn is a permanent resident in my good books and though Kurt is sometimes (perhaps even often these days) reduced to "Saint Kurt of the Gays," Colfer still deserves the recognition he's getting here.

Supporting actress, series, miniseries or movie

Hope Davis, The Special Relationship
Jane Lynch, Glee
Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire
Julia Stiles, Dexter
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

Jane Lynch, now and forever.

Miniseries or TV movie

Carlos, Sundance Channel
The Pacific, HBO
Temple Grandin, HBO
You Don't Know Jack, HBO
Pillars of the Earth, Starz

Wait, Carlos was a miniseries or TV movie and not the longest movie in the world, as I saw it at the Bytowne? Huh. As for Pillars of the Earth, I checked out after episode two.

Actor, miniseries or TV movie

Idris Elba, Luther
Ian McShane, Pillars of the Earth
Al Pacino, You Don't Know Jack
Dennis Quaid, The Special Relationship
Edgar Ramirez, Carlos

Yes, Carlos is long, but Ramirez is mesmerizing in it.

Actress, miniseries or TV movie

Hayley Atwell, Pillars of the Earth
Claire Danes, Temple Grandin
Judi Dench, Return to Cranford
Romola Garai, Emma
Jennifer Love Hewitt, The Client List

Some ammendments...

How to Train Your Dragon was really good. Toy Story is overrated and overdone.

Modern Family is fantastic and should win. Glee should not, I agree.

Also, where Friday Night Lights and Sons of Anarchy in the drama nominations? Why do the globes hate amazing TV?

Finally, Katey Sagal for the win! Yes I know, my love for SOA is intense, but she really is fantastic in the role and I think she deserves props!
