Earth Day is an international day of celebration aimed at stimulating positive actions to protect the environment.  Held annually on April 22, Earth Day is the largest environmental event celebrated worldwide.  It is projected that more than six million Canadians will participate in the many events aimed at improving the environment in their community this year.  This Earth Day, try reducing your greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by choosing an alternate transportation option:

- bike to work

- take the bus instead of driving

- carpool with colleagues

If you must drive, reduce time idling and ensure your tires have proper pressure.

According to Statistics Canada's Human Activity and the Environment: Annual Statistics 2007 and 2008, energy production and consumption are by far the largest source of GHG emissions in Canada, accounting for more than 80% (747 mega tonnes) of emissions in 2005, 25% higher than in 1990.  The increase was driven by growth in emissions from activities that require combustion of fossil fuels, such as driving cars or the production of electricity.

Earth Day Canada is the environmental communications organization that coordinates Canada's celebration of International Earth Day.  You can find more information about Earth Day and/or register an event here.

If you live in Canada, take a look at the events in your local area using this map.

No matter where you live on this blue/green planet of ours, please take the time to do your part!
