P L A C E presents

the debut Ottawa performances of Berlin based composers and producers Nils Frahm (Erased Tapes) and Greg Haines (Sonic Pieces) in a special concert at Freiman Hall (610 Cumberland Street, Ottawa University)

Tuesday May 10
9pm

Nils Frahm, born in 1982, had an early introduction to music. During his childhood he was taught to play piano by Nahum Brodski – a student of the last scholar of Tschaikowski. It was through this that Nils began to immerse himself in the styles of the classical pianists before him as well as contemporary composers. In early 2008 he founded Durton Studio, where he has worked with likeminded musicians.

The three instrumentals, which make up his debut release 'Wintermusik' are piano led pieces, coloured with occasional celeste and reed organ parts. The record’s equal measures of sorrowful refrains and uplifting passages, combined with a real intimacy that makes for an album you'll want to return to again and again. The songs were originally intended as a Christmas present for friends and family and first released on sonic pieces, hence its winter release via London-based cinematic music label Erased Tapes.

As the curator of the Swedish boutique label Kning Disk’s Piano Series, Peter Broderick invited Nils to record a new album of piano improvisations – the result is 'The Bells', which will now also be released on Erased Tapes in the UK, Ireland and North America. The record includes pieces of improvised piano music, which were recorded in the wonderful Grunewald church in Berlin.

Greg Haines is an English musician and composer currently living in Berlin, who specialises in exploring the middle-ground between the academic world of contemporary classical music and the freedom found in the desire to manipulate and experiment with sound itself.

In the wake of his debut album 'Slumber Tides', released on the Norwegian Miasmah label in 2006, Greg toured Europe extensively and began to develop as a live performer, and in particular as an improviser. With his most frequent collaborator, Danny Sau, the duo 'Liondialer' was formed around the concept of purely improvised music, with no discussion in advance of performances and no pre-ordained strategies. Since 2008, Greg has also been working regularly in the contemporary dance world, creating music for choreographers such as Meg Stuart (Berlin), Ina Christel Johannessen (Oslo) and the MD Collective (Cologne).

In March 2010, he released his second album on Berlin's Sonic Pieces. Entitled 'Until the Point of Hushed Support', it is a forty-eight minute composition written for string quartet, church organ, piano, percussion, electronics and a whole array of other sounds and textures that have been carefully collected and constructed over the past two years.
