SLOAN The Double Cross http://www.sloanmusic.com Dist: Outside
The 12 songs making up the album were recorded at the Sloan Space at the end of 2010. Jay wanted to share this insight on the album with you: I think every band always says of their latest LP "it's our best yet!" or perhaps "it's our greatest work since Exile On Main St.", and then you hear it and you say to yourself, 'hmm, well, not quite, guys'. Hopefully I'm not joining those ranks, but for this our 10th album, I personally feel it's up there with my favourites of ours such as One Chord To Another and Never Hear The End Of It...short and sweet with unexpected turns down different paths. Not bad for a 10th LP.

MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA Simple Math http://www.myspace.com/manchesterorchestra Dist: Sony Music Canada
Manchester Orchestra’s new album, Simple math, is about that experience. It was recorded at blackbird Studios in nashville and mixed by Joe Chiccarelli. Manchester Orchestra has always been about truth; about passion. It’s why alternative Press gave MO’s 2009 acclaimed Mean Everything To Nothing (which yielded the top 10 modern rock hit “I’ve Got Friends”) a five-star Lead review that called the album “a masterpiece of intricacy and honesty.” You can feel their passion in the power of Hull’s voice and the fury of the band’s music in every track they’ve ever laid down, a power that wraps itself around you and demands your attention as Hull’s lyrics guide you through the world as he sees it.

On The Randy Newman Songbook Vol. 2, the second in a proposed three-volume retrospective, the singer and songwriter offers another engrossing solo set, just piano and voice, that swings between the hilarious and the heartbreaking, sometimes brilliantly encompassing both. Longtime collaborators Mitchell Froom and Lenny Waronker, who were also behind the boards for Newman‘s acclaimed 2008 Nonesuch disc Harps and Angels, co-produced. These 16 tunes, drawn from a catalogue that now spans four decades, are not normal indeed.
TRAMPLED BY TURTLES Palomino www.trampledbyturtles.com Dist: Warner Music Canada
With a bracing hybrid of classic songwriting, bluegrass and folk, this breakneck acoustic quintet hails from Duluth, Minnesota, the Great Lakes port town that spawned such fabled Minnesota brethren as Dylan through to the Jayhawks. The result of this pan-genre spot-welding is a sort of North Country & Mid-Western Blue-collar ‘grass with a fistful of gunpowder tossed into the wood-burning stove. Trampled By Turtles‘ style is permeated by a poignant, seductive desolation that calls to mind the likes of contemporaries Avett Brothers, Blitzen Trapper, Bill Callahan and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver).

ANVIL Juggernaut Of Justice www.anvilmetal.com Dist: Sony Music Canada
Since their 1981 debut, “Hard n’ Heavy”, the group - which was co-founded by singer/guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner - has been listed by many as one of the creators of the thrash/speed metal genre (especially on such classics as 1982’s “metal on metal” and 1983’s “forged in fire”), but due to subsequent bad record deals, bad management, and just plain bad luck, anvil appeared to take a back seat to a new wave of metal bands - most of which listed the group as a prime influence. However, anvil has never stopped rocking, and with the arrival of the critically acclaimed/surprise hit film, “Anvil! The Story Of Anvil”, the group is back where they belong – at the forefront of heavy metal.

NAZARETH Big Dogs http://www.nazarethdirect.co.uk/nazareth/ Dist: Universal Music Canada
After the critical success of the recent album “The Newz”, Nazareth approached the recording of this new studio album with a sophisticated challenge: no tricks, no studio gimmicks – just the real thing – the authentic sound of the four members of the band in the studio. The band ultimately wanted to bring the real spirit of rock and roll back. That’s why it only takes one play to realize “Big Dogz“ will be a fans’ favourite album as much as “No Mean City“(1979) or “Hair of The Dog“ (1975).
BOOKER T JONES The Road From Memphis http://www.bookert.com/ Dist: F.A.B.
The Road from Memphis starts with a young Booker T. Jones hauling his stack of newspapers to Phineas Newborn’s front yard where, while folding them for his after-school delivery route, he could listen to the jazz great practice piano. It ends with Booker and The Roots roaring through a set of both timeless and contemporary originals (and propulsive covers of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and Lauren Hill’s “Everything Is Everything”). The Road from Memphis is classic Memphis soul, and classic Booker in the tradition of “Green Onions,” but beyond that it is the story of a sound, and how Booker, working with the inheritors of his sound, is keeping a tradition alive.
MAN MAN Life Fantastic http://manmanbandband.com/ Dist: F.A.B.
Life Fantastic is the much anticipated follow up album to Rabbit Habits (2008), an album which inspired Paste magazine to proclaim of the band - “They are what rock ’n’ roll is meant to be and, frankly, what most rock bands have forgotten altogether: these songs are fun.” Working for the first time with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes), Man Man have brought along the fierce energy of their renowned live shows while finding a new melodic voice on songs like “Oh, La Brea” with its Harry Nilsson music hall touches, or “Life Fantastic” loping along to a classic David Bowie piano vamp. Expanding their palette while keeping the found instruments (typewriter bell, anyone?), Man Man continue to evolve into an entirely new form of propulsive pop music.
