In last Thursday's episode, "Let the Right One In" (incidentally a fantastic movie if you haven't seen it), Pearl once again makes the mistake of thinking she can trust Frederick for even half a second. Pearl and Anna head into town, making Frederick promise to play nice. Turns out his idea of playing nice is kidnapping Stefan, so he can torture Stefan to death. Shirtless, which is nice for the viewers, but unfortunate overall. Damon grokes to the Stefan-is-missing thing pretty quickly, but Mrs. Gibbons' is thralled into keeping Damon out. Elena hilariously thinks she should just go wander into Vamp Camp, but even Damon recognizes that for the stupid plan it is. So they appeal to . . . Alaric?! Seems that Stefan told Damon all about Alaric's magic ring at some point off-screen. Since Alaric's vampire-invincible and human, that makes him Damon's perfect ally for Operation Rescue Stefan. For reasons unclear, Alaric agrees to this plot (although, TBH, if I were vampire-invincible, I'd probably roll up to Vamp Camp to kill all the vampires sooner or later). They eventually agree to let Elena come along as the getaway driver. All sorts of staking, vervain-darting, and Mrs. Gibbons' neck-snapping later, Elena decides that getaway driver isn't the role for her and busts into Vamp Camp to free her man. Fortunately, Damon finds her first, and, after a quick, "Are you INSANE?", they free their man. Stefan also makes them free Harper, who, it may shock you to learn, is against fellow vampire torture. Now Stefan has an ally in Pearl's coven. Unfortunately, Frederick's really attached to his kill Stefan plan, so he disables the getaway car and attacks Elena and a severely injured Stefan. Elena manages to vervain dart Frederick, but Stefan's too weak to fight or run. After approximately one hundred years of me yelling, "Feed him your blood!", Elena figures that she should give Stefan a taste. He gets all Angel about it, "No, I couldn't possibly, please run away and let me die," but Elena insists. He does drink, of course, but Elena's not as into is as Jeremy was with Anna last week. Stefan regains his strength just in time to stake the crap out of Frederick. Elena takes this burst of violence toward the vamp who tortured her boyfriend for hours and would have kept it up for hours more somewhat poorly and even more poorly when Stefan growls at her. They come to a détente later. Later still, Damon returns home to find two empty blood bags with Stefan going to town on the third, blood all over his mouth. Damon looks discomfited, and I cheer, "Stefan's back on the juice!" From the look of the previews, Stefan didn't stop drinking human blood because he believes in the sanctity of human life or because he loves Elena so. Human blood appears to turn Stefan hyper-aggressive because he is a blood addict. While I am confused as to how that is different from just being a vampire and Supernatural has made me wary of blood addiction storylines, I was too thrilled by the opportunity to hell,"Stefan's back on the juice!" No matter what happens, you know Paul Wesley is going to rock it. In other news:

Oh, show, just when I think I could not love you more. Remember when Vicki asked Stefan how long it's been since he drank human blood, and he shot a side glance at Elena and cryptically replied, "It's been years." Apparently that meant something! I could not be more impressed with the "apparently that meant something!"s on this show. It didn't mean something until the end of the episode, though, so hang on a moment.
