Well Formed Data brings together a selection of works that are formally linked through their use of research aesthetics and the moving image. Weaving through many disparate topics of study and lines inquiry, the videos offer compelling examples of how the artistic research process is turned into form. We see the authors—several artists, a filmmaker and a curator—employing a variety of rhizomatic methodologies. They assume the role of the organic researcher, attempt investigative journalism, play with documentary tropes or perform as lecturers and storytellers.

Big Trouble In Little China Exhibit: Starring National Gallery of Canada Artist Michel Luc Bellemare
Commencing in March, professional artist Michel Luc Bellemare is returning to his roots in Ottawa's chinatown and opening a new show at raw sugar cafe and gallery. In the labryth of chinatown Michel, as anti-hero Jack Burton, via his surrealistic abstract art will vanquish the dark forces of lo pan via his surrealistic abstract art and liberate chinatown from mundane artistic mediocrity. So be there or Lo Pan wins.

Christ Church Cathedral Ottawa Girls’ Choir with special guest Julie Nesrallah

Last year the Cathedral’s Girls’ Choir held its first Annual Gala Concert and Silent Auction featuring Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, with special guest soloist Juno Award winner Shannon Mercer. The evening was a resounding success, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
This year’s edition — Songs of Fervour — promises to be equally memorable. With an eclectic selection of works by Baldassare Galuppi, Eric Whitacre, and the Cathedral’s own Timothy Piper, and featured guest soloist ... Julie Nesrallah, this promises to be one of the musical highlights of the year.
Doors open at 6:30 for the Silent Auction (cash or cheques only accepted), and the concert will begin at 7:30. The Silent Auction continues during intermission, and a cash wine/soft drinks bar will be available.
The first half of the concert will feature mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah and the Cathedral Girls' Choir under the direction of Timothy Piper singing Galuppi’s Dixit Dominus with live orchestral accompaniment. After intermission, the choir presents Five Hebrew Love Songs, a set of hauntingly beautiful works by Eric Whitacre accompanied by string quartet. Following this will be a gorgeous solo set of love songs by Reynaldo Hahn sung by Ms. Nesrallah. The concert concludes with the premiere performance of Timothy Piper’s latest classical/pop composition — a profound and moving work based on the poems of Edna St. Vincent Mallay, an American lyrical poet, playwright and feminist who was the third woman to win the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

Ottawa filmmaker Michaelf Ostroff delivers an evocative filmic journey into the deep brooding mystery and inner beauty of Emily Carr's paintings. Working from first-hand accounts, letters, diaries and Emily Carr's published writings, Ostroff dispels a number of myths about Carr's life and her contradictory attitude toward the First Nations people of the northwest coast of BC.

In conjunction with "Conversation Pieces: African Textiles from Barbara and Bill McCann’s Collection," Carleton University Art Gallery invites you to participate in a discussion about the rich and diverse range of African textiles presented in the gallery. The discussion takes place in the gallery on Sunday, 6 March 2011, at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome! Admission is free, and free parking is available everywhere on campus.
"Conversation Pieces" explores the many ways that textiles initiate dialogue about and between people in Africa and elsewhere. The three panelists - scholar Lisa Aronson, curator Catherine Hale, and collector Barbara McCann - will each talk about specific works in the show and discuss how textiles and clothing throughout the African continent are actively employed to communicate concepts of identity, history, and community.
Highlights of the exhibition include an intricately-appliquéd raffia woman’s skirt from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a cotton hunter’s shirt from Mali adorned with leather amulets and mirrors, a richly-embroidered cotton man’s gown from Nigeria, a Moroccan wool hooded cloak featuring a vivid red “eye” motif, and a three-part bridal outfit from Egypt’s Siwa Oasis region. The exhibition also features a textile-themed work by Yinka Shonibare, "Mr. and Mrs. Andrews without their Heads" (1998), loaned by the National Gallery of Canada.

Jim Leach’s exhibition “A Breath of Fresh Air” is being featured at Rothwell Gallery March 1 – 12th.
Jim’s landscape paintings are primarily scenes from the Eastern Townships region of Quebec and the Ottawa/Gatineau area. He is predominately a “plein air” painter and enjoys the solitude of painting in situ. If he is without his paints, Jim will produce a sketch, often using oil pastels, and complete a painting in his studio: “I seem to be able to recollect where and when each sketch was done and what the weather conditions were at the time.” Jim is continually inspired by the works of Tom Thomson, The Group of Seven, Rene Richard and Leo Ayotte.
