Gomorrah

Twice this week have I been asked if there are any good movies coming out; twice have I paused for an uncomfortably long time and eventually said, "No." What is with this summer? I feel like I was running out of hours in which to watch movies last summer, and this time around there's little to catch my eye. At any rate . . .

Some reviews suggest that the chemistry between Ryan Ryenolds and Sandra Bullock in The Proposal save the rote script, but nothing short of a glowing review from one of my favourite critics will get me to line up for this one. Similarly, nothing in Year One, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera in a movie that suggests thousands of years of history occurring simultaneously, looks remotely funny. That leaves us with . . .

Goodbye Solo, about an elderly man who asks an immigrant cab driver to take him up a mountain and leave him there, opens this weekend at the Bytowne. Reviews for this one have been very positive. Over at the Mayfair, you've still got a chance to catch another well-reviewed film, Gomorrah (pictured), an Italian mob movie that, in the words of our illustrious Books editor, "makes The Godfather look like The Sound of Music." Both sound heavy, to be sure (I can attest that the interlocking systems of oppression that conspire to prevent anyone from ever getting out in Gomorrah certainly are), but it's better to be challenged than insulted. Do yourself a favour, alright?
