The Lexicon: an occasional feature in which we identify movie/TV lines worth repeating.
Source: Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), Arrested Development, "Key Decisions" (S1, E4)
Usage: Shit happens.
Sarcastic or sincere: Either way, depending on the way in which you mean it. If you want to express sympathy, be sincere. If you want to make a point about how someone really should have seen that coming, rely on your old friend sarcasm.
Given that 1) Arrested Development is an endlessly quotable show and 2) "hop-ons" is an oft repeated idea within the show, it was a bit tricky to know where to start. Even so, we headed back to the first known mention of the elusive hop-on. Within the show, it's people who take advantage of the Bluth Company stair car and hop on the back for a free ride. Hey, these sort of things happen when you drive a stair car. So when things go wrong, as they inevitably do, nod your head and sagely reply, "Oh, you're gonna get hop-ons."
Bonus: Double your lexicon brownie points by relying on the preceding line, as spoken by George-Michael Bluth (Michael Cera), to describe a situation in which you hit a few bumps in the road but ended up alright: "I had a few hop-ons."
