Posted by April in submissions , ottawa , charity , art

The Causeway Foundation is currently seeking donated artistic and photographic images for its 2010 Holiday Card Campaign.
This annual campaign raises money to support a local organization, Causeway Work Centre. Causeway is a community economic development organization that provides a range of employment and educational programs to individuals with mental health issues and/or disabilities, and those who are homeless or at risk of becoming so.  One hundred percent of the funds raised by the Holiday Card Campaign support Causeway.
The annual sales of Causeway Holiday Cards surpass 17k each season and are well received at various Ottawa sales venues and provide wide exposure to local area artists. 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of the Holiday Card Campaign.
Instructions for submissions:
Include two or more scanned images of drawings, paintings or photographs that depict the nation's capital's architectural and/or cultural icons. The images should be in colour and have a Christmas holiday season theme.  To view examples of previous card submissions, visit http://www.causewayfoundation.org or contact the Causeway Foundation office at 613-725-3494 x108.
Send your submissions to: info@causewayfoundation.org by February 28, 2010. Successful candidates will be notified by email and/or telephone.

RED WALL GALLERY presents
METAPHORICAL - SOLO SERIES 2010
Vernissage:  Friday February 12th, 2010, 18:00-21:00 The dresses fabricated by Wesley Kirschner are born of her imagination. She works with glass, newsprint, and piano wire to build an art piece to be photographed. By placing each dress in context, she allows the viewer to momentarily forget about the fashion and creates a setting and image that could be an editorial page in any fashion magazine. It is through this vision and imagination that she creates a visual metaphor for the fashion industry. The Red Wall Gallery is located in SPAO at 168 Dalhousie, at the corner of Bruyère, in the Byward Market.

"Presenting: Canterbury" features paintings, photographs, sculptures and mixed media pieces created by eight promising young artists enrolled in 'Arts Canterbury', a specialized intensive arts program offered at Canterbury High School in Ottawa. Dale Smith Gallery is pleased to present the second annual exhibition of work by graduating visual arts students.  Last February the first exhibition of work by student artists was a great success.  My aim is to offer these talented young people an authentic exhibition experience.  At this stage in their career, they are constantly experimenting and changing, and their work is fresh and original-and it's of truly amazing quality. The artists are Rose Anderson, Hannah Bailey, Anna Cumyn, Tricia Flohr, Jason Guo, Lisa Sleiman, Darya Tonkykh and Alice Zhang. Join the artists and friends at the opening reception on Friday, February 5, from 7-10 p.m. | 137 Beechwood Ave. The exhibition continues until March 2.

Shannon Armishaw: Opaque Surfaces/Shattered Landscapes @ Gallery 115

Posted by April in out on the town , ottawa , art

Gallery 115 is pleased to present Opaque Surfaces/Shattered Landscapes, a solo-exhibition by University of Ottawa's BFA student Shannon Armishaw. Taking her inspiration from the  contemporary urban environnment, this collection of works explores the relationship between sub-cultural identities and meaning within an increasingly superficial and commoditized society. With Armishaw's depiction of bleak and somber faces we are left to ask how individual resistance and sub-cultural identification and creation can permeate and affect the empty surfaces of the capitalist spectacle, if at all. Do aesthetics have the ability to subvert and transgress or does the individual become appropriated, mass produced and disposable within capitalism? Armishaw dives beneath the surfaces of aesthetic temporality to reveal the yearning individual that is lost within that empty masquerade.
Shannon Armishaw is from Ottawa, Ontario. She is currently in her fourth year at the University of Ottawa studying Fine Arts with a Major in Painting. Her work has been featured in various group exhibitions across the Ottawa area, such as Young Guns: A Collective; Fight the Stereotype; Red Mercury; Sculpture in Transformation and, I Was, I Am, I will Be. Her work is in the permanent collections of The Brook Street Hotel, Personal Pilates Corporation, Rkive9 Art Direction+Design+Motion, and A la Envy Custom Couture. This is Armishaw's first solo exhibition.
Please join us on Monday January 25th from 4 - 9pm for the opening night of the exhibition.

Call for submissions @ DAÏMÕN

Posted by April in submissions , gatineau-hull , art

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Next deadline: January 31st 2010
Located in the La Filature building - a former magnificently renovated industrial textile mill - DAÏMÔN offers creation, production and dissemination resources in the areas of media arts and photography.
By way of its programs Artiste résident, (resident artist), Recherche et création, (research and development), Photographie et impression numérique (photography and digital printing) and Soutien aux premières œuvres, (support for first works), DAÏMÕN encourages artists to push the limits of their practice and to develop new approaches with image, video, as well as sound and electronic art, including installation, interactive and performative practices. DAÏMÕN privileges projects emphasising the increasingly complex interrelations between media and those that push the limits of intermedia rather than simply addressing the vocabulary of the chosen media. Only projects involving a degree of research will be considered.
With its STUDIÕ, production and exhibition spaces, DAÏMÕN encourages the materialization and installation of, and experimentation with, works of significant scale as well as the development of transversal practices. Public and informal meetings are regularly organized in order to allow the local community to familiarize itself with the work of artists in residence. This multipurpose STUDIÕ is available to artists for the experimentation, production and presentation of work requiring a specific technical infrastructure.
DAÏMÕN provides artists with access to image and sound recording equipment and digital audio and video editing suites. A darkroom enables large scale (1m 32) silver emulsion development from negatives of up to 280 mm. A digital printing service (EPSON Stylus 9600 Pro) is also available.
CREATION PROGRAMS
Artist Residency
Research and Creation
Support for First Works
Photography and Digital Imaging
Artist Residency
Offered to professional artists outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region, this program aims to promote fruitful exchange between artists from here and elsewhere. Established, mid-career artists with at least five years of active and significant practice are invited to apply.
For each of the projects the centre provides a residency of 4 to 6 weeks including accommodation, access to the Centre’s equipment, and the services of a technician (60 hours). An artist’s fee of $1500 is provided. DAÏMÕN is also able to provide travel allowance and cover limited daily expenses. All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist. DAÏMÕN organises a public evening artist’s talk, in which the artist presents their past and present work.
Research and Creation
Open to professional emerging, mid-career or established artists. DAÏMÕN selects six artists annually, three from the Ottawa-Gatineau region and three from elsewhere.
DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for four (4) weeks and the services of a technician (50 hours). DAÏMÕN is also able to provide travel allowance and cover limited daily expenses for artists from outside the region. All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist.
Photography and Digital Imaging
This program aims to improve the support offered to artists working on paper using darkroom or digital imaging techniques.
DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for three (3) weeks and the services of a technician (15 hours). DAÏMÕN is also able to provide travel allowance and cover limited daily expenses for artists from outside the region. All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist. Artists using darkroom facilities must provide their own development chemicals and photographic paper.
Support for First Works
DAÏMÕN continues its support for the production of a first work for three artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Admissible projects include the production of an original work using video or the application of hybrid media in artwork.
Emerging artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region with basic training are invited to apply to create a first work in photo, video or new media in a professional context. Professional artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region with an established practice in another discipline (painting, sculpture, photography, installation, etc.) who wish to develop a production in video or new media are also encouraged to apply.
DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for three (3) weeks and the services of a technician (30 hours). All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist.

Blair Paul“I am a walking recording device, constantly seeing, sensing, feeling what goes on around me.”    Blair Paul, 2009
Almonte artist Blair Paul is constantly On the Edge of Discovery.  His sensitive and perceptive artistic observations will be featured in a brilliant display of his work at Ottawa’s Cube Gallery, 7 Hamilton Ave. North, from Jan. 6-31, 2010.

This show, On The Edge of Discovery, will showcase Blair Paul’s “remarkable versatility which ranges from realism to minimalism, from landscape to abstraction,” according to Lillian  Michiko Blakey, president of the Ontario Society of Artists. “He has amazing technical expertise and skill in a variety of media, all of which captivate the viewer – the stark geometric contrasts in his drawings, the conceptual messages in his abstract paintings and the lush textures in his landscapes.”

Blair will also be launching his book, On the Edge of Discovery, at the Jan. 6 opening of his show at the Cube.  Collected Works will be selling books at the event.  Doors open at 7pm.
Blair has worked as both a professional fine artist and art educator at a number of prestigious institutions and designed and coordinated the Introduction to Fine Art Program at Algonquin College. He has had numerous exhibitions in Canada and abroad. His work is now held in many private and corporate collections world-wide.

On the Edge of Discovery opens at the Cube Gallery, 7 Hamilton Ave. N., on Jan. 6 and runs until Jan. 31.
