JOHN MELLENCAMP No Better Than This www.mellencamp.com Dist: Universal Music Canada
Produced by T Bone Burnett featuring 13 new original songs! Recorded with just one microphone and a vintage Ampex tape recorder at three historic locations!
In an age of auto-tuned, computerized recordings, John Mellencamp’s approach on his Rounder debut, No Better Than This, is refreshing. The entire album was recorded with Mellencamp and his band playing live in one room using a 55 year-old Ampex tape recorder and just one vintage microphone. Legendary producer T Bone Burnett captured the stunning thirteen new Mellencamp originals at three historically important locations: Sun Studio in Memphis, TN (where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis all first recorded); the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA (the oldest Black church in North America, dating to 1775); and in Room 414 of the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, TX (where Robert Johnson made his first recordings in 1936). The songs on No Better Than This reflect classic American musical traditions including blues, folk, gospel, rockabilly, and country, while addressing such themes as the need for hope, the nature of relationships, and narratives that recount extraordinary occurrences in everyday life. Mellencamp says of the album, “It was absolutely the most fun I’ve ever had making a record in my life. It was about making music – organic music made by real musicians – that’s heartfelt and written from the best place it can come from.”
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD SOUNDTRACK www.scottpilgrimthemovie.com Dist: Universal Music Canada
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) includes a number of original songs composed by alternative/modern rock kingpin Beck. They are performed in the film by Sex Bob-Omb - the group featuring Scott Pilgrim (Cera) on bass, Stephen Stills (Mark Webber) on lead vocals and guitar and Kim Pine (Alison Pill) on drums. Cast members perform the band’s vocals, with multi-platinum and Grammy® Award winner Beck providing instrumentation - a unique collaboration unprecedented in the annals of soundtrack albums. Beck’s Sex Bob-Omb songs, including the grunge-infused “Garbage Truck” and the alternative-themed “Summertime,” are woven seamlessly into the film. Both the film and album feature four Beck/Sex Bob-Omb tracks, as well as “Ramona,” a Beck (only) song featured here in both acoustic and lush orchestral arrangements.
TOM JONES Praise and Blame www.tomjones.com Dist: Universal Music Canada
Jones has collaborated with producer Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Rufus Wainwright, Laura Marling) to release a captivating collection of songs drawn from the American spiritual, blues and contemporary repertoire. Praise & Blame is a stripped‐down, gritty, soul‐bearing album from an artist with a successful, multi‐genre recording career that spans five decades. Jones celebrated his 70th birthday on June 7 this year. One would never guess that he has reached such a milestone when hearing the power, restraint and clarity he presents in his renditions of songs by Susan Werner, Bob Dylan and John Lee Hooker. Traditional repertoire from the works of The Staple Singers, Mahalia Jackson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe are also given unique, fervent interpretations by a world‐renowned voice that is at the top of its game.TRACKLISTING:

Michel-Luc Bellemare's showing at the Snapdragon Gallery is a vibrant display of bright, deep colours and thickly textured oil paint, from the palm-sized, circular, orangey-pink "Cupcake" to the large, tri-coloured triptych "Do-Re-Mi." Bellemare's technique can indeed sometimes look like icing applied a pastry, particularly when he works in those pale, pinkish hues, but darker works such as "Burnt Autumn" also show an earthier sensibility.
A visit to the gallery, on the corner of Bank Street and Third Avenue in the Glebe, will be time well spent, even if you are not in the market for art. The space is clean and bright and open, showing the works to good advantage, and the welcome, from gallery owner Richard, is congenial. It will be an oasis of calm and relaxed contemplation of art on a hot, buzzing summer day.

Okay, are you ready for it? Pixar's big movie of the summer is here, so you can assume that it's pretty much the only game in town. Toy Story 3 is no doubt as charming, funny, and moving as every Pixar movie in creation, so the fact that you are sitting here reading this suggests some deficiency on your part.
Alternatively we have Jonah Hex, yet another in a long line of less-than-known comic book adaptations that are really starting to confuse viewers with their very existence, and . . . that's pretty much it for wide releases.
