Today in Headline Fun

I'm a big believer in making your own fun. If the Daily Show has taught me anything (oh, how it has), it's that the news can play a big role in said fun-making. All you need are a few headlines. Such as:

"Victoria dancers sparkle in the limelight"
Misread that as daylight, and you might think Stephenie Meyer attacked Victoria.

"J'ai tué ma mère fails to win César"
So not only did Xavier Dolan's film lose, it also came home to face a very disappointed parent Montreal Gazette.

Glee's Heart's a Drummer

Posted by April in tv , other mags , music , in the mag , glee , dance , comedy , av club

SectionalsLast night's fall finale of Glee (our top new comedy pick) was exactly the whirligig of drama, comedy, and singing that we've come to expect. While Glee may pretend that it's a parody of musicals and after-school specials, as Troy would tell you, it's actually a show that uses singing and comedy to disguise exactly how depressing it really is. Of course, music and laughter are necessary components for most humans to make it through their banal-to-soul-crushing days, so who can hold it against the 12 students that make up McKinley High's show choir? It's the best part of Santana's day!

In thinking about how awesome last night's entry was, though (and it was awesome), the very things that made it awesome also got me thinking about some stuff they should really straighten out before the show returns April 13 (yes, April 13. Try to hold it together). Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk, and Ryan Murphy, could you meet me over at camera three?

Okay, that's better. Three things:

What Does Ben Folds Have on Steve Jobs?

Posted by April in technology , steve jobs , music , jakob dylan , iTunes , hotties , getting with the times , dance , ben folds

Jakob DylanA few weeks ago, I decided to turn on iTunes Genius. Sure, it sends information back to Apple and its sole purpose is to sell me more music, but, hey, I like playlists. I like it when someone else curates them for me while I write or clean or throw a one-woman dance party. My first mix was based on The Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." While it was only 13 songs, it was pretty good mix. I doubt I would have thought to throw Flo Rida in with the Marvelettes.

At first it seemed like the only drawback was Genius' refusal to base mixes on certain songs. Cat Power's "Half of You" could appear in a mix, but it doesn't contain enough information to be the starting point. When this happens, I get a little pop up asking me to update Genius. Apparently someday these updates will magically produce a mix based on one of the rejected songs, but I'm not holding my breath.

This weekend, however, I came to realize the real problem with Genius. Every single mix I have created contains at least one Ben Folds song. At first I assumed that this meant that I have a disproportionate number of Ben Folds songs available. Turns out I have only four Ben Folds songs. 4. Yet one, if not all four, song appears in each mix. They are completely middle of the road in terms of ratings and play count, so I am left to wonder what Folds has done to deserve such Genius prominence. Does he have compromising pictures of Steve Jobs with a giraffe and a jar of pickles?

Swayze Passes On, but the Human Spirit is Still Alive

Posted by Kevin in sex symbols , r.i.p. , icons , hotties , dance , cinema , badassery

Last night actor and dancer Patrick Swayze succumb to a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57 years old.

Swayze wooed an entire generation of women as the dance instructor in what is perhaps the most popular chick flick of all time, Dirty Dancing.

And while his line, "Nobody puts baby in the corner," will live on forever in cinema history, it's the speech he gave as Bodhi, the adrenaline junkie surfer and bank robber in the early 90s action classic Point Break, that will always stay with me:

"This was never about the money. This was about us against the system. That system that kills the human spirit. We stand for something. We are here to show those people inching along the freeways in their metal coffins that the human spirit is still alive!"
