Animation Festival Announces Kids Jury Contest

Posted by admin in submissions , ottawa , festival , contest , animation

Animation Festival Announces Kids Jury Contest
Kids to judge films and TV shows made for them
Ottawa, Ont. (August 24, 2010)--The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) is inviting local kids to enter its annual Kids Jury contest.  Ten animation enthusiasts, ranging from the ages of 9 to 14 years old, will be chosen to judge this year’s competition of short films or TV series made for kids.
To be chosen for the jury, local kids are invited to write a one-pager describing why their favourite animated character is the best cartoon ever.  Ten lucky winners will be whisked away to the Canadian Museum of Civilization on Saturday, October 23, 2010 to watch either short animated films or TV series made for children.  They will pick their favourite films or TV shows and award prizes on stage to the winning filmmakers on Sunday, October 24, 2010.
“We are always delighted to read kids’ perspectives on their favourite cartoon characters.  Writing an essay gives these kids an opportunity to put their thoughts down on paper and gain a better understanding of a jury’s role when judging a film or TV show,” said OIAF Managing Director Kelly Neall.  “Why sit at home watching cartoons, when you can sit at a spectacular venue like the Canadian Museum of Civilization and watch cartoons there!” added Neall.
To enter the OIAF’s Kids Jury contest, the one-pagers must be submitted by e-mail: info@animationfestival.ca, by fax: (613) 232-6315, or by regular mail: Ottawa International Animation Festival, 2 Daly Avenue, Suite 120, Ottawa, K1N 6E2.  The kids must include their name, age and an e-mail address or phone number where they can be reached.
The contest deadline is 4:00 p.m. on September 24, 2010.  The winners will be announced at the OIAF News Conference to be held during the first week of October.
The OIAF is also offering other activities for kids and teens at this year’s Festival including: free animation workshops and special screenings.  Kids and teens can get more information by visiting the OIAF’s Toon Apprentice website: www.toonapprentice.ca.  Toon Apprentice is an educational resource aimed at teaching kids, teens, their parents and their teachers about the world of animation.

Bluesfest Bullshit

Posted by April in wtfs? , live music , festival , comedy , bluesfest

thingLast night we hit up Bluesfest for Hole, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and Louis C.K. I wasn't entirely sure how we were going to see Joan and Louis simultaneously, but we figured we'd give it a try. At the information tent, a nice man informed us that we would need to get a stamp in order to leave the main festival area, cut through the War Museum, and pop into the comedy tent. No problem.

After Hole's set, featuring a delightfully spacey Courtney Love demanding cigarettes and set changes to reflect her bluesy birthday mood, we zipped around trying to figure out where we could get these magical stamps. Turns out what you actually need to do is get your ticket scanned as you leave and then again when you re-enter.* As we prepared to enter the comedy stage, my best friend's ticket scanned easily, while mine caused a giant red STOP to appear on the screen. Some sort of manager took me aside to explain that Louis C.K. is "a $45 dollar ticket, and they're sold out." Reasons why this is bullshit:

  • When purchasing our tickets, we told the girl at the kiosk in the Rideau Centre that we want to go see Louis C.K. At no point did she mention that that requires some sort of additional fee.
  • We bought out tickets at the same place, at the same time, and paid the same price. So why does one get in and one get left out?

In the end we caught all of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' amazing set, so there's no real harm done, except for the part where it's bootsauce not to tell people that they are going to have to pay more. That's it! That's all you have to do! Just tell them. So, if you are planning to go see Lewis Black on July 17, that's going to be an additional $45. And the tickets are probably sold out.

Canadian Lit round up - May 26, 2010

Posted by Brendan in writing , reading , politics , ottawa , other mags , festival , documentary , cancon , canada , books

As mentioned before, Ayaan Hirsi Ali will be in Ottawa on June 10, as part of the Ottawa International Writers Festival. The event coincides with the publication of her third book, "Nomad," which is primarily a charting of her alienation from the Muslim faith she grew up in. The Globe and Mail's reviewer, Theodore Dalrymple, is, on the whole, very positive and notes that she states her case "with both modesty and great eloquence." His sole caveat is that "the Enlightenment ideal that she espouses is rather too simple as an answer to the problems of human existence."

The latest issue of Brick magazine contains a series of three essays on the passing of Allan King, the versatile Canadian filmmaker most known for his powerful documentaries on social issues such as race, poverty, domestic abuse, and death. (Here is an insightful youtube clip incorporating an interview with King and footage from some of his films. It also has Orson Welles, smoking a cigar and saying that movie directing is "the only profession in the world where you can be incompetent and go on being successful for thirty years with nobody ever discovering.")

And Prairie Fire magazine contains an interview with Austin Clarke, the author of the Giller Prize-winning The Polished Hoe, in which he discusses race, immigration, and the concept of "home."

In a remote mountain valley in Ecuador, coffee and sugarcane farmers face the dismal prospect of being forced off their land to make way for a mining project. Unprotected by the police and ignored by their government, they prepare to face down the 'invaders' on their own. Their resistance leads to a remarkable and dangerous stand off between farmers and a band of mysterious armed men high in the cloud forest. In a world dominated by news of massacres and terrorism, Under Rich Earth is a surprising and poignant tale of hope and determination.

Weekend Viewing: February 12 - 14

© Universal PicturesSlim pickings for standard Hollywood fare this weekend. You've got Valentine's Day, which looks like someone plucked three scenes each from a pile of rom-coms and stuck them together rather than figuring an entire movie out; Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which gets no points for incredibly long title and also revolves around three teens who find out they're demi-gods who need to retrieve the bolt from the lightening thief; and The Wolfman, because werewolves are hot right now, and no one noticed that Benicio Del Toro isn't aging well.

Over at the Bytowne, you can check out The Last Station, for which Helen Mirren received an Oscar nod,  and New York, I Love You, because even the Bytowne's not resistant to splashing something with a big heart over St. Valentine's Day.

Finally, the Mayfair has prepared a smorgasbord of love and love-hate movies (notably Audition in the latter category), though you'd do well to start with tonight's Painted Lips and Lolly Licks: Sexy Film Festival.

She works with glass, newsprint, and piano wire to build an art piece to be photographed. By placing each dress in context, she allows the viewer to momentarily forget about the fashion and creates a setting and image that could be an editorial page in any fashion magazine. It is through this vision and imagination that she creates a visual metaphor for the fashion industry.
