We are looking for an exceptionally creative and energetic individual to join our small team in the role of Curator.

BACKGROUND

Founded in Ottawa in 1973, Galerie SAW Gallery is a non-profit artist-run centre dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art. Today, with its strong focus on outreach and community development, Galerie SAW Gallery boasts an annual audience of over 30,000 people. The centre’s risk-taking exhibition program presents the work of many artists who are not often considered by other Canadian art institutions. An evolving space comprised of Galerie SAW Gallery, Club SAW and the SAW outdoor courtyard, the centre is an ideal venue for the presentation of performance, media art and new artistic practices. Located in the National Capital region, Galerie SAW Gallery actively participates in political discourse around cultural diversity, the rights of artists and freedom of expression.

MANDATE

Galerie SAW Gallery

- promotes contemporary Canadian and international artists, emerging and established, from diverse cultural backgrounds;

- presents a contemporary art program with a strong focus on Canadian performance and media art, with bilingual interpretative material produced for each exhibition;

- adapts to the changing nature of the contemporary arts by maintaining an evolving interdisciplinary presentation space comprised of SAW Gallery, Club SAW and the SAW outdoor courtyard;

- serves the needs of diverse communities through audience development initiatives;

- engages in collaborations with other arts organizations to increase opportunities for exhibiting artists and to outreach to new audiences;

- commits to paying artist fees above CARFAC recommendations.

JOB PROFILE

You will develop and organize critical and innovative exhibition programs that appeal to a wide range of audiences, in accordance with Galerie SAW Gallery’s mandate. You will work to build the centre’s relationships with artists and organizations from the Ottawa-Gatineau region, Canada and abroad. You will use your expertise in communications to contribute unique community outreach programs and public relations initiatives.

You will work closely with the Director to research, plan, manage and deliver all aspects of the gallery’s programs.

REQUIREMENTS

You will have at least three years of experience in curating exhibitions, in producing publications, in organizing events and in leading teams to deliver projects. You will have a diploma in studio arts, art history, curatorial studies or a related field, along with solid experience working in an artist-run organization, and a broad knowledge of contemporary art. You will have outstanding writing and editorial skills, including proven grant writing skills. As an active figure in the contemporary art scene, you will have exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively. You will have a strong background and interest in outreach and community development. A thorough knowledge of and demonstrated interest in performance and media art programming will be an asset. A strong command of both French and English will be preferred.

SAW Video Workshop - Fiction Screenwriting

SO, YOU WANT TO BE A SCREENWRITER:  A FICTION SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP WITH TOM SHOEBRIDGE

Saturday February 5th and Sunday February 6th
10AM - 5PM each day
Members: $100/ Non-members: $125
Deadline to register: January 28th, 2011
Limited to 12 participants

This two-day workshop at SAW Video will concentrate on the structural elements of visual storytelling in dramatic films - theatrical, movie-of-the-week, and on-line. Elements to be covered include visual language, scene set-up, sequences, action, dialogue and script format. Students will be expected to bring a story at whatever stage it is currently in.

Tom Shoebridge has taught scriptwriting for over 30 years in which his students have created many award-winning films. In 1981, he founded the Canadian Screen Training Centre which trained over 7,000 students in 600 workshops until it closed in early 2010. Over the years, Tom has personally offered screenwriting workshops across Canada, in South Africa and Bermuda. He is the co-author of Best Canadian Screenplays, the first anthology of its kind.

Club SAW, 67 Nicholas St (Arts Court basement) Presented by Available Light Screening Collective & Inside Out LGBT Film and Video Festival MARK is a deeply personal and visceral homage to Mark Karbusicky, editor and friend of acclaimed experimental filmmaker Mike Hoolboom, who committed suicide in April 2007. Hoolboom, in an attempt to find answers, compiles the residual fragments of Mark from home movies, childhood photographs, and interviews with friends, family, and his life-partner of ten years, trans performance artist Mirah-Soleil Ross.

SAW Video Employment Opportunity : Media Arts Programmer

SAW Video seeks a Media Arts Programmer to plan and implement our ongoing dynamic media arts programming.
SAW Video’s Programmer oversees all aspects of presentation programming at SAW Video including: curating programs; planning, organizing, and presenting screenings, exhibitions and other media arts events; preparing grant applications for programming activities in conjunction with SAW Video’s Director; negotiating artist and curator fees, coordinating travel and accommodation for guest artists and curators; writing promotional and critical text on programming events; overseeing the design and production of programming materials; updating programming section of the website; fostering collaborations with presenting partners locally, nationally, and internationally; and attending regional and national festivals/events related to media art when possible.
Hours of work: 32 hours per week (4 days a week)
Starting wage: $16 per hour plus dental/health benefits
Qualifications:
The selected individual will have:

  •  A minimum of 3 years media arts curatorial experience;
  • Extensive knowledge of contemporary media art practice and the media arts milieu in Canada and abroad;
  • Proven grant and critical writing experience;
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage several tasks simultaneously;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Proficiency with design software an asset;
  • Bilingualism is a strong asset.

Available Light: 2010-2011 Bilingual Call For Proposals (March 31 deadline)

AVAILABLE LIGHT SCREENING COLLECTIVE: CALL FOR CURATING PROPOSALS FOR THE AUTUMN 2010 - SUMMER 2011 SERIES

Available Light Screening Collective (AL for short) is an Ottawa, Ontario-based volunteer organization committed to curating and presenting experimental film and video artworks within the local community. From its inception in 1995 as a Super 8 production group, AL has functioned as a non-incorporated artists' collective, a democratic and flexible form of governance in keeping with the shifting character of the dynamic experimental media artworks it is dedicated to presenting.

Available Light Screening Collective is currently seeking written proposals for media arts curating projects for its 2010-2011 season. The series is scheduled to begin in September 2010 with most programs presented at our primary exhibition venue in Ottawa, Club SAW at Galerie SAW Gallery. Proposals for other venues in the region, including outdoor sites, will also be considered. A professional curator's honorarium, as well as individual artists' fees for each work screened, will be paid upon the successful completion of the project.

A new initiative proposed by members of the Board of Trustees of Galerie SAW Gallery, Free School is a free workshop and lecture series geared toward professional visual and media artists working in the Ottawa and Gatineau regions. Providing an exceptional opportunity to delve into a curriculum that few learning institutions deliver, Free School features leaders in various fields related to the arts, who will speak to artists in practical terms on subjects ranging from crating and conservation to working with curators and running a studio. Informative and accessible to a wide range of artists from emerging to established, this series is meant to enrich your artistic career all the while providing a unique networking opportunity.
