The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer: First Person Shooter?

Posted by April in trailer , the amazing spider-man , lesson learned , inception , andrew garfield ftw

Let's skip over the usual blah blah about why is this happening again and so soon re: Spider-Man, okay? We'll revel in the casting, the positively defiant high school/Gwen Stacey-ism of it all, and hope against hope that that first person shooter stuff of Spider-Man running around New York isn't going to make the final cut of the film. Gossip Girl Season Four Trailer: OMD!

Posted by April in tv , trailer , gossip girl

Aside from the Paris stuff, most of what's in the Gossip Girl season four trailer is a rehash of where we left things last season (particularly with Nate and his terrible hair), so let's just skip ahead to what we're really concerned with: Chuck and Blair. Does she look exquisite? Check. Is Chuck's convalescence mysteriously the hottest he's ever looked? Double check (extra check for his best hair ever). What will Ed Westwick's exquisitely expressive face bring us next season (starting September 13, only 11 days away!)? If the last shot's anything to go by, a look so hungry your screen is going to burst into flames. Watch:

Vampire Diaries Season Two Trailer: How We Respond Will Define Us

Posted by April in vampires , vampire diaries , tv , trailer

vdThe tagline the CW marketing people have gone with is "The Year of the Kat," but since that is ridiculous, I'm taking my cues from Stefan on this one: "She came here to destroy us. How we respond to that will define us." Yup, looks like season two of our beloved The Vampire Diaries will focus on Katherine's return to Mystic Falls. Since is looks like "unstable" Damon will choose the second part of Katherine's "kill me or kiss me" ultimatum, I guess it falls to Stefan to stake his maker. Better bust out that flame thrower, Salvatore. (Psst: hit the "read more" to watch the video.)

The Runaways: Starring Jenny Humphrey?

Posted by April in youtube picks , tv , trailer , music , gossip girl , coincidence , cinema

Kristen Stewart and Dakota FanningIn addition to the fact that The Runaways will have begin a limited release in Canada and the U.S. this Friday, it's been well publicized for some time now that it stars Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherrie Currie. Nothing new here, obviously. But I actually watched the trailer this weekend, and you know what? It totally stars Gossip Girl's Taylor Momsen. See for yourself:

Is Jay Baruchel a 5?

Posted by April in trailer , tomato nation , sayings , poster , jay baruchel , hotties , geekery , cinema

She's out of my league posterAt the movie theatre yesterday, I saw this poster for She's Out of My League. After a brief "hurrah!" for Jay Baruchel in a starring role (it's about time he got his own 40 Year-Old Virigin/Knocked Up broadsheet), I thought, "Wait, is Jay Baruchel a five?"

Alright, he's gangly, his voice can be quite nasal, and he still looks ridiculously young for his years. But is there nothing to be said for his dorky almost total foxiness (he could do with a couple of sandwiches) and crack comic timing?

I'm guessing that a five would designate someone as perfectly average looking. Maybe I need someone to explain the scale to me because "average" doesn't seem to cut it with this one. On the other hand, the movie appears to be the epitome of my mom's favourite saying, "There's no accounting for taste." That, and "use your head for more than a hat rack."

True Blood's Jaw-Dropping Season Two Trailer

Posted by April in youtube picks , tv , true blood , trailer , shout out , in the mag , hotties

After last night's True Blood, in which Sarah and Jason go at it in the balcony of the sanctuary at the Fellowship of the Light while Sookie and Hugo are locked up downstairs (and Godric's apparently rattling around down there somewhere) and Lorena prevents Bill from saving Sookie at Eric's behest and Daphne betrays Sam to Maryann so she can cut out his heart, I had a heart attack. At the second season's mid point, Alan Ball et al had ratcheted up so much tension that I cannot possibly watch an episode without a lot of yelling. Then, this happened:

Hot Tub Time Machine trailer

Posted by April in trailer , science! , cinema

Hot Tub Time Machine seems more premise than movie, and, though Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Rob Corddry, and John Cusack are all awesome in their own ways, it's hard to imagine under what circumstances they would come together in a hot tub (well, not hard to imagine, per se, but hard to imagine in non-fanfic way). Still, the teaser trailer's out, and it had me laughing by the end.

2012 Trailer = Bananas

Posted by April in trailer , silly , cinema

Like all good Roland Emmerich movies, 2012 looks to have no shortage of massive destruction: meteors, tidal waves, blizzards. But don't worry! The end of the world, as foretold by the Mayans, is no match for . . . John Cusack and Amanda Peet? Well, at least Chiwetel Ejiofor thinks people should fight for their lives. Fight what, I'm not sure, because like the earth is careening into the sun or some such, but fight they must! That sexy dude commands it. In the meantime, watch the trailer and note two things: 1) the loaction of crack in the Sistine Chapel and b) JFK getting his revenge.

Trailer: The Time Traveler's Wife

Posted by April in trailer , cinema , books

The Time Traveler's Wife finally has a trailer, which is nice, since the adaptation began filming back in September 2007 and was production was plagued even before that date. It seems to focus more on Claire (Rachel McAdams) than Henry (Eric Bana), which strikes me as a little strange, and I'm trying not to get my hackles up about things that don't jive with the source material. At the very least, it doesn't seem to capture the page-turning excitement that ripples through Audrey Niffenegger's novel. On the other hand, what's August without a nice weepy romance? I'll try to give it the benefit of the doubt.

New Moon trailer

Posted by April in twilight , trailer , teen films , silly , robert downey jr. , cinema , awards

I don't know because I don't watch that sort of thing,* but apparently the New Moon trailer premiered at the MTV Awards.  Can't tell which part is funnier: that they focus so heavily on what's, as I recall, they first two chapters of the book; that I'm supposed to believe Bella could outrun Laurent for even a second; that a guy who is part wolf would be body hair free (but the vampire has chest hair? c'mon); or the wolf. See for yourselves:

Sherlock Holmes trailer

Posted by April in trailer , robert downey jr. , cinema , badassery

I'm obviously already pumped for anything that stars two of my fantasy draft picks, but the new Sherlock Holmes trailer also looks like more fun than director Guy Ritchie's ever had before. I could do without so many of the bullet-speed action sequences that litter the trailer, but that's small potatoes. I think I might starting liking Jude Law again.

The Hurt Locker gets a new trailer

Posted by April in trailer , cinema , awards

I'm pumped that The Hurt Locker, acclaimed war drama somehow nominated for Independent Spirit Awards despite having yet to be released, has gotten a new trailer. The first one I saw made no sense, featured a countdown to I-don't-know-what, and was only notable because it contained Jeremy Renner. Now we're onto something. Let's hope it's July release serves it well.

Moon Trailer

Posted by April in trailer , cinema

In case you haven't already seen it, the Moon trailer is out there looking insane. Seriously, it's directed by David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, and it looks like Ziggy Stardust crossed with 2001. While I normally steer clear of all 2001 related things, Sam Rockwell is one of the best actors I can think of to make finding a copy of yourself in space (spoiler? I don't know; it's in the trailer) seem like the creeping dread I want to watch. Enjoy!

Jackson on horse

This Friday brings this year's first big opening weekend with Watchmen. Maybe you've heard of it? If you didn't go see it last night and want to save yourself from the fanboy rush, you can head over to the Bytowne for Cadillac Records about the heyday of Chess Records when the likes of Etta James, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters were recording there or One Week, where Joshua Jackson gets movie cancer* and decides to ride his motorcycle (picture: and a horse?) across Canada. It sounds pretty mushy, but Jackson's a careful and talented actor capable of grounding far fetched material in real human emotion (he's probably the reason I watched Dawson's Creek as long as I did, which is to say: too long), so I have hope.

Tomorrow night, hit Library and Archives Canada (395 Wellington St.) for the CFI screening of the restored print of Guy Maddin's Archangel at 7 p.m. "A weird and wild melodrama of obsessive love, Archangel is set in the northernmost tip of old imperial Russia in the winter of 1919. The Great War has been over for three months, but no one has remembered to tell those who remain in the town of Archangel. Maddin's powerful black and white cinematography and memorably stylized set design make this a film quite unlike any other." It's $10 without a membership and $6 with membership.
