Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Okay, dear readers, I have a confession to make. I've been doing this weekly Wednesday Webcomic feature for over twenty weeks now, and... well... I've run out of Webcomics!

There are still lots of big name webcomics out there that I haven't covered, PvP, Dr. McNinja, and Achewood (to name a few), but try as I might, I've never gotten into them. All of the webcomics I really dig, I've already covered in the last twenty weeks.

So... I'm turning to you (Cult)ure readers! Please, share with me your favourite webcomics, so that they can be featured in our Wednesday Webcomics posts in the weeks to come. You can list them in the comments section of this post, or email me at kevin@culturemagazine.ca.

Wednesday Webcomic: I am a Host at The Olive Garden

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

I haven't spent much time surfing around Gregnog.com yet, but his "I am a Host at The Olive Garden" series of strips are just the kind of slice of life comics that I love. Anyone who has ever worked a crappy job can relate to the 26 strips found here.

Wednesday Webcomic: Moe

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Moe is just good old fashioned gag humour. While some of the strips are real groaners, others can't help but produce a smile or a laugh with their child like innocence.  The strip is updated two or three times a week.

Wednesday Webcomic: Buttersafe

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

The "about us" description on Buttersafe's website is rather appropriate: "Buttersafe is updated with a new comic every Tuesday and Thursday. These comics will have pictures and probably some words. Nothing else is guaranteed."

This sort of unpredictability is part of what makes the Buttersafe so fun. Some strips are black and white, some are colour, some are simple stick figure images, some have intricate illustrations, some are created by Raynato Castro (Tuesday's comics), some are created by Arthur Culan (Thursday's comics).

Wednesday Webcomic: Wonderella

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

The Nonaventures of Wonderella is Justice Pierce's superhero parody staring the decidedly non-heroic protagonist Dana Price, aka Wonderella. Featuring a diverse supporting cast that includes the likes of Wonderita (the sidekick) and Hitlerella (the arch nemisis), and depicted in brightly coloured images with an almost South Park cardboard cut-out feel, the strip is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face, regardless of whether you are laughing along with Wonderella, or at her.

If you have the internet (you do, don't you?) then there is a good chance you've already run into Dinosaur Comics, the long running fixed-art strip staring a T-Rex and his two dinosaur friends.

Though now residing in Toronto, Dinosaur Comics creator Ryan North is an Ottawa native and a Carleton University graduate. (Take that University of Ottawa.)

Wednesday Webomic: Exploding Dog

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Exploding Dog has a simple concept: readers send in proposed titles (It's the Best I've Ever Eat, Life is Just Swell, Not Today, etc.), and artist Sam Brown produces a single panel comic based on that title. Sometimes funny, sometimes absurd, sometimes touching, Sam's images are always striking.

Wednesday Webcomic: Boy on a Stick and Slither

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Boy on a Stick and Slither is Steven L. Cloud's strip which features conversations between a snake and a boy with a head on a stick. Close up panels are usually super imposed over a larger establishing shot that serves as background, and the characters are often featured in silhouette. The boy is an idealist, while the snake maintains a snarky cynical attitude.

Wednesday Webcomic: Diesel Sweeties

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , music , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Richard Steven's webcomic Diesel Sweeties launched in 2000. Illustrated in a pixel-heavy digital style, the comic depicts a world where robots exist alongside humans, and human/robot romantic and sexual relationships are commonplace. Quirky relationship discussions are the focus of the strip, for the most part, with references to indie music culture and the sex industry thrown in for good measure. The strip is updated daily.

Wednesday Webcomic: Red Meat

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , comics , av club , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

When I was a teenager, my father lived in San Francisco. He used to cut out interesting articles and other items that caught his eye in the local underground and independent SF newspapers and then send them to my sister and I in packages stacked full of interesting reading. These packages always included at least a couple of strips of a comic called Red Meat, which I just loved. Imagine my surprise and delight, then, when I learned the strip is available online over at The A.V. Club!

Red Meat often contains static images with no background for all three panels, and its dark/absurdist humour was a huge influence on my own comic strips published in my University paper from time to time. Created way back in 1989, Cannon's Strip is now twenty years old, but as good as ever.

Wednesday Webcomic: Penny Arcade

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , gadgets , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Penny Arcade is a long running and extremely popular webcomic written by Jerry Holkins and illustrated Mike Krahulik.  The duo's site receives more than two million page views daily!  Their strip is primarily focused on video games and D&D style gaming culture.  As such, the jokes can often be too obscure for non-gamers such as myself.  That said, every once in a while the comic is so universal that an entire generation has no problem getting the joke:

Wednesday Webcomic: In Bloom: The Alternate History of Kurt Cobain

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , music , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Over at a little publication called The Villiage Voice, artist Ward Sutton has created an illustrated slide show depicting what would have happened had Kurt Cobain put down the shotgun and picked up the guitar.

It is kind of funny, kind of sad, and well worth checking out.

Chances are a friend already emailed you a favourite XKCD strip, right?  You know, it's that comic with stick figures about life, love, and....um... math.

Wednesday Webcomic: Garfield Minus Garfield

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , garfield , comics , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Long before I was reading Gasoline Alley, Scott Pilgrim, Sandman, or Daredevil, I was reading Garfield. It was those collections of Jim Davis' Garfield strips that introduced me to comics as a medium. Unfortunately, Garfield isn't really one of those childhood loves that one can easily revisit and enjoy as an adult. Luckily there is Garfield Minus Garfield, a website dedicated to removing Garfield from Garfield strips. The result is a strange, surreal experiment that is, quite often, funnier than the original strip.

 The site updates daily!

Wednesday Webcomic: Joe Loves Crappy Movies

Posted by Kevin in wednesday webcomic , summer blockbusters , cinema , art

Every Wednesday (Cult)ure shares with you one of the internet's best webcomics.

Joseph Dunn sees a lot of movies. A lot of crappy movies. Then he makes webcomics about the experience. They are usually hilarious, and a must read for fans of mainstream Hollywood cinema and genre films.
